Goodfield Interpersonal Values Exercise

SECTION ONE

Write 10 sentences that reflect the main goals you have now and hope to achieve within the next five years.

  1. In 5 years, I will be in management position at a Fortune 500 oil company.
  2. In 5 years, I will be making $250,000 annually
  3. In 5 years, I will have my PMP
  4. In 5 years, I will be a leader
  5. In 5 years I will be an expert in Commodity marketing/trading
  6. In 5 years, I will weigh 180 lbs.
  7. In 5 years, I will have two children
  8. In 5 years, I will work from home.
  9. In 5 years, I will be a university professor
  10. In 5 years, I will be a member of the Sweetwater Country Club

SECTION TWO

Write 10 sentences that begin with the words, "I am... "

  1. I am sensitive
  2. I am energetic
  3. I am anxious
  4. I am verbal
  5. I am confrontational
  6. I am fearless and fearful
  7. I am truthful much of the time
  8. I am creative
  9. I am caring
  10. I am loud


SECTION THREE

Write 10 sentences that begin with the words, "I need... "

  1. I need encouragment
  2. I need freedom
  3. I need to entertain
  4. I need to make people laugh
  5. I need to be the center of attention
  6. I need to be wealthy
  7. I need peace of mind
  8. I need tranquility
  9. I need exercise
  10. I need adoration

SECTION FOUR

Write 10 sentences that begin with the words, "I am concerned (or anxious) about... "

  1. My financial future
  2. I am concerned about my career future
  3. I am concerned about not being able to lose weight
  4. I am concerned about Darryl not meeting his potential
  5. I am concerned about Darryl not being happy
  6. I am concerned about Darryl being alone
  7. I am concerned about not being able to have a baby
  8. I am concerned about not progressing in my career
  9. I am concerned about being financially poor
  10. I am concerned about my salary
SECTION FIVE

Repeat sections one through four, responding this time as you feel your partner would respond.

  1. In 5 years, he will be working for the same company
  2. In 5 years, he will be in the same position
  3. In 5 years, he will have his PMP
  4. In 5 years, he will be making little over his salary
  5. In 5 years, he will be unhappy and frustrated
  6. In 5 years, he will weigh 270 lbs.
  7. In 5 years, he will have one child
  8. In 5 years, he will work long hours.
  9. In 5 years, he will hate his job
  10. In 5 years, he will be a member of the YMCA

  1. He is overly sensitive
  2. He jumps off cliff without a parachute
  3. He gets wild ideas
  4. He has to be doing a million things at once
  5. He loves to spend what he earns
  6. He wants to live the rich life but can't afford it
  7. He is a princess
  8. He is obnoxious
  9. He doesn't like to share
  10. He gets depressed

SECTION SIX

Rank in order or priority all 10 sentences in all of the sections. Most important will be 1., second most important is 2, and so on.

SECTION SEVEN

Look at each section; write one sentence for each section that captures the feeling tone of each section.

SECTION EIGHT

Look at the four sentences about yourself that you have just written in section seven, and the four sentences you have just written about your partner in section seven, synthesis the four sentences about yourself and the four sentences about your partner into two sentences.

SECTION NINE

Exchange papers and discuss one section at a time, starting with section one and work forward.

SECTION TEN

When participating in this exercise, keep in mind that the goal --- as it is in life --- is the process and not the end result.
